*** list admins
Debbie Levitt [webmaster@frenz.com] and
Heidi Tandy [heidi@frenz.com] are the only administrators
of this mailing list.
their main job is to promote happy flowing discussion
and to make sure the policies in this FAQ and
the "more info" page are being adhered to. they
will NOT be ruling with iron keyboards, but do
plan to step in when necessary to make sure
that way-off-topic threads are ended and that
EVERYONE has a positive experience on the
list. if you post in violation of the rules, you
may recieve an email from them asking you
to refrain from making those kinds of posts
in the future. if you continue to break the same
rule, after multiple warnings, the admins may start
reviewing your posts before they go to the list,
although your list-reading ability will not be affected.

*** overview of the list
the frenz mailinglist is an email mailing list and is almost
in real time (99% of messages should be delivered within
5 minutes or less). it is hosted by L-soft, one of the top
mailing list companies on the known planet. members
can read the immediate list or the digest, and there is
also a web-based archive. the coolest part is that the
web-based archive is current within 5 minutes, and
can be accessed even by non-members, so you
don't have to join the list to stay on top of what we're
talking about. also, you can post from the web, so if
you don't have decent email access, this may be
the way to go for you! however, you'll still need a
valid email address to signup since only members
can post to the list via email or the web. this list is
paid for by proceeds from the annual frenz.com auction.

is this list some sort of official fan club thing?
no. while the fan club supplies us with lots of good
information, news, and merchandise, they do not
control frenz.com. this list is a feature of frenz.com,
which was created and is maintained by
webmistress Debbie Levitt, and is in no way the
official mailinglist of the Frenz of the Enz Fan Club.
the fan club shares important information and news
with both our list and other related mailing lists, so
if you're reading at least one of these lists or
watching the frenz.com website, you should be
100% in the know.

*** rules and policies
explanations and/or examples of rules that say
[more info] can be found at the very bottom
of this document

the frenz mailinglist is designed as a place for
announcements and conversation about frenz.com
as well as past, present, and future projects that
involve members of Split Enz, Crowded House, or
any group or project that includes at least one related
musician. the following are on topic: anything related
to the frenz.com site or offerings (including this
mailinglist); questions, answers, announcements,
and opinions on songs, albums, musicians, and
performances; announcements of internet resources
containing frenz-related material. [more info]

don't forget that your posts are public (seen by the
list and then as part of the archive), so you may
not want to say anything that's read by lots of people
and then sitting on a website for eternity that you
really wish you hadn't said. if you wouldn't say it to
all of our faces while we all had coffee together
live in "real" life, then please don't post it.

all frenz-related questions are welcome, including
those from people who have not read the FAQ, any
websites, or certain books.

"for sale", "for trade", and "wanted" posts are allowed,
but please include the terms "sale," "trade," or
"wanted" in the subject line so that people who are
not interested can avoid the post. selling fan club
cds or photos OR copies of them is not allowed in
general and especially on this list. [more info]

discussions and suggestions about rules and policies
for this mailing list should contain the word "policy"
in the subject line so that uninterested readers can
easily avoid those threads.

the following are off topic: presentations of multi-
level-marketing schemes; offerings of sexual services,
materials, or correspondence; ads for cheap or
psychic phone service or any product or service
not related to frenz-related musicians; posting or
attaching any files or images; discussion of
peripheral musicians outside of the work they
did with Frenz-related members and projects;
discussion of other musicians, Australasian or
not, who have NOT been part of any frenz-related
band or project. [more info]

postings about where recorded frenz-related
music was heard may be off topic. [more info]

running a recurring "_____ of the week" request
for discussion on a specific song, album, or
musician is not for this list. [more info]

please don't flame, bicker or dis anyone.
someone may have a fact (like what colour
was Neil's shirt on what night) but nobody
has the best or only way to perceive or
understand anything about music, these musicians,
or music business. if you have a problem with
another subscriber or something he/she said,
please take that up with that individual privately. [more info]

profanity, vulgarity, or curse words not related
directly to a quote from a frenz musican's song,
performance, or tv or radio appearance should
be excluded from your post. [more info]

if you feel like you should be putting "not frenz
related" in the subject or body of your post, it probably
doesn't belong on this list. [more info]

posts that are joking, kidding, or speculation (but are
written fairly seriously or matter-of-factly) should be
clearly marked toward the beginning "humour,"
"speculation," or the like so that people don't go
around believing the stuff you made up or are
speculating about.

if you plan to talk about one song or album
frequently in your post, please spell it out the
first time, show the abbreviation you intend to
use, and then use abbreviations afterward if
you so choose.

please refrain from posting non-informative
matter, one-line terse posts, or posts that only
say "me too, yeah I agree," or "thanks." [more info]

please note this list is set up so that if you hit reply,
your post will go ONLY to the person who sent the
post to which you are replying. if you hit "REPLY
TO ALL" from your email program, you will be
sending your reply to the sender AND the whole
mailinglist. so just make sure you know what you
really want to do before you do it! :)

*** subscribing and unsubscribing

our list system WILL confirm your subscription,
so make sure it is being sent from a valid email address.

please use the page smoe provides here to join
or leave the immediate or digest list OR to change
your subscription settings. If you have questions or
are having problems, just email Heidi or Debbie;
there's no need to email the whole list.

http://www.smoe.org/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr/domain=smoe.org

if you are a regular or digest member of the list, you
may post to the list at [list@frenz.com]. this goes
through smoe, so when the mail comes from our
list, it will have lots of headers containing
smoe and not frenz.com.

*** netiquette

you can find resources about general internet
etiquette (netiquette) at http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Information_and_Documentation/Beginner_s_Guides/Netiquette/

don't post in all caps unless you want to be read
as shouting. please don't shout. instead, you
may want to capitalise a few words, use *stars*,
or emoticons :) to try to show the emphasis of
your sentence or the intention of your words.
please remember people are reading and not
hearing you, and may miss sarcasm, humour,
or something else you thought you were expressing.

please do not send entire or parts of a private mail
someone sent to you to the list without the sender's
permission. there is a reason that person chose to
send you that mail privately, so please respect that
by not sharing their mail, even if you don't quote the source.

please do NOT send emails that contain HTML,
styles, or formatting. [more info]

please do not publicly correct anyone's spelling,
grammar, typos, or word choice.

if your reply can benefit from a small quote from
the previous mail, please include that quote. if it's
not necessary, please do not quote the entirety of
a long mail, even if your mail app does it by
default - just delete those bits.

*** [more info] for the rules and policies

the frenz mailinglist is designed as a place for
announcements and conversation about frenz.com
as well as past, present, and future projects that
involve members of Split Enz, Crowded House,
or any group or project that include at least one
related musician.

the frenz mailinglist covers the following:
	FRENZ.COM-related things including notification
of site or subsites being updated or created,
discussions based on frenz.com content (ie:
Peter Green's diary entry or our discography
	database), frenz.com enhancements and
evolution, discussions that grow out of forum
	posts/threads, announcements of special
	frenz.com offers and contests
MUSICIANS including Brian "Tim" Finn, Phil Judd,
Geoffrey "Noel" Crombie, Anthony "Eddie" Rayner,
Paul "Emelyn" Crowther, Jonathan "Mike" Chunn,
Geoff Chunn, Wally Wilkinson, Mike Howard, Miles
Golding, Robert Gillies, Neil Finn, Nigel Griggs, Mal
Green, Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, Mark Hart,
	and Liam Finn.
BANDS and PROJECTS include: Split Ends, Split
Enz, The Mullanes, Crowded House, Noel's
	Cowards, Schnell Fenster, Brainwaves, ENZSO,
Finn Brothers, DeadStar, The Swingers, ALT,
	Largest Living Things, Deckchairs Overboard,
The Makers, and Lazy Boy. Also included are
solo and production projects of the
	abovementioned musicians.

"for sale", "for trade", and "wanted" posts are allowed
though the subject of the post must contain "sale,"
"trade," or "wanted" so that people who are not
interested can avoid the post. selling fan club cds/photos
OR copies of them is not allowed in general
and especially on this list.

the no selling cds, photos, or copies thereof is a
fan club mandate AND it just happens to be copyright
and trademark infringement; this includes CD-Rs of
albums, shows, and fan club cds.

the following are off topic: discussion of peripheral
musicians outside of the work they did with Frenz-related
members and projects; discussion of other musicians,
Australasian or not, who have NOT been part of any
frenz-related band or project.

discussion of Bones Hillman's work in The Swingers
is relevant whereas discussion of his time as a
bandmember in Midnight Oil is not. however, we
believe that mentioning that Bones is in Midnight
Oil or that Robert Gillies works for Xena: Warrior
Princess is OK since some people may not have
known that, and can then pursue Midnight Oil or
Xena outside of frenz.com and the mailinglist.

postings about where recorded frenz-related music
may be heard are off topic.

"My local radio station played 'Something So
Strong' today," or "I heard 'Chocolate Cake' in
Kmart today." however, if you find a live broadcast
or a place online where people can hear frenz-related
music, that is very relevant! also, if you heard a song
in Kmart while watching Nick Seymour pick out
fishing equipment before your very eyes, that's
	an on-topic post!

running a recurring "_____ of the week" request
for discussion on a specific song, album, or
musician is not for this list.

The "Song of the Week" is a fave on the Tongue
in the Mail mailing list. That feature was originally
theirs, and works well for them. We are not
against the discussion of music, lyrics, or songs.
We are not against people choosing frenz-related
songs and asking questions of list members, in
fact, we couldn't encourage it more. However, we
currently see no need for this list to have a
scheduled "everyone talk about this now on these
points of discussion." We feel that this list does
not need a special occasion or _____ of the week
to talk about a specific song, nor do we want, at
this time, any particular list member to be in
charge of a recurring list feature.

please don't flame, bicker or dis anyone. someone may
have a fact (like what colour was Neil's shirt on what
night) but nobody has the best or only way to perceive
or understand anything about music, these musicians,
or music business. if you have a problem with another
subscriber or something he/she said, please take that
up with that individual privately.

while you don't have to like other people's opinions,
please do your best to be accepting, tolerant, and
allowing of what other people hear, feel, and
perceive. "Anyone who doesn't like the ALT
album obviously doesn't understand music and
the purpose of human existence," is the type of
remark we hope to not see on this list. part of the
beauty of life is that not everybody thinks the way
you do; please choose to honour differences you
may find instead of attacking people for not liking
what you like or hearing what you hear. personal
attacks of any nature, either to a specific person,
a comment one person made, or attacking people
of a certain opinion or persuasion are RIGHT OUT.
if you need to release aggression, we recommend
going to the gym, therapy, or meditation. please do
not take anger out at the list even if you feel the list
or someone on it caused it. you can always email
the list admins and discuss what you are thinking.

profanity, vulgarity, or curse words not related directly to a
quote from a frenz song or musician should be excluded
from your post.

they are unnecessary, offensive to some, and may
cause problems for people receiving these mails
at work; many companies keep and monitor all
mails coming to and going from each employee.
it is possible that a random fan employed by such
a company could get into some sort of trouble or
at least be asked to unsubscribe if the company
has a policy on acceptable language for emails.
you may use interjections and exclamations (we're
not trying to squash excited or frustrated
expression!), but please no swear words. some
recommended replacement phrases are, "oh my,"
"holy cats" or "holy cow," and for you scooby doo
fans, "zoikes." :) the only exception for this "rule"
would be if you are quoting a frenz-related person
or song. in that case, please "bleep" out the word
so that you end up with s**t, for example.

if you feel like you should be putting "not frenz related"
in the subject or body of your post, it probably doesn't
belong on this list.

while we expect the list to be social and friendly,
we do not want personal posts or threads that
are blatantly not about the musicians and their
music, ie: "Do you like basketball?" or "Can
anyone send me a good guacamole recipe?"

please refrain from posting non-informative matter, one-line terse posts, or that only say "me too, yeah I agree," or "thanks."

non-informative would be content that is either
off topic based on other rules, such as a run-down
of your day (with very little frenz/finn to speak of).
a good rule to go by is to take a look at what you
want to share... if you think it might spark or
continue conversation, send it in! if it's a random
comment or short showing of support or
	disagreement (without additional facts, thoughts,
or opinions), it's probably best sent privately to
	the relevant people.

please do NOT send emails that contain HTML,
styles, or formatting.

this includes when you change text colour and
font size and the like. many email applications
do NOT recognise these instructions, but DO
put in gobbledygook that the recipient sees. so
if you can turn off HTML messages or "styled"
messages, that would probably be best.
